The first step in starting a career as a HGV driver is to get your provisional Category C licence. Also known as Class 2 licence, this is the entry level qualification to drive commercially.

The Cat C licence provides opportunities for many business sectors and the type of driving can vary ranging from local deliveries to international logistics.

In order to gain your Category C/Class 2 licence you’ll need to:

✓ Be at least 18yrs of age

✓ Hold a valid UK driving licence

✓ Pass a medical assessment which assess your fitness to drive

Once you have obtained your licence a renewal is required when you turn 45yrs of age and every 5yrs thereafter. Once you reach the age of 65 you will need to renew your licence every year.

With every renewal, a medical is mandatory.

The DVLA will usually send out a reminder letter alongside the D4 medical form a few weeks before your medical is due. Alternatively, you can work out when your medical/renewal is due from the expiry date on the back of your HGV licence.
